On the meandering shoreline of Doo Lough, lies a small, weather-beaten pier that hosts two punts; one of several small traditional boats of Ireland. This glacial valley is full of memories from those generations lost to the famine while invoking a sense of awe from the mountainous peaks that surround this iconic place.

Behind the Image

The Doo Lough Valley has nearly always been some part of my commute home to Clare Island and passing along its winding bóithrín I never tire of the epic scale of this location. On various occasions, one can see the odd fisherman attempting to catch trout while on the lake and they typically launch from this small pier near the South Western corner. This particular evening, travelling back down to Galway, I stopped at the pier as the two punts lay strewn in the shallows of the pier caught my eye. Coupled with some moody clouds, I attempted several shots that required the wind to cede so the various bushes and Scotts Pine behind were not too blurred. Paired with this long exposure image, I felt it captured the essence of this tranquil scene.
