from €25.00

Rocks emerge from the oncoming tide on the shores of Glassilaun Beach in North-Western Co. Galway. This particularly beautiful arced beach lies at the mouth of Killary Fjord while on the other side, Co. Mayo’s highest mountain, Mweelrea, looms large over the sandy bay.

Behind the Image

Since moving to Galway, the beach that I feel I have been drawn to the most, has been the incredible Glassilaun. The arced bay is beautiful in all weathers, evoking tropical conditions on a sunny day, to ethereal & atmospheric in heavy blankets of cloud, all while the impressive Mweelrea stands guard at the mouth of Killary fjord closeby. Having spent time in these waters away from any photographic excursions, they are wonderfully clear, with an abundance of kelp forests and variety of fish species to keep one entertained during several hours of snorkelling. This particular evening in late February, I had hoped that the forecasted light conditions of a gap along the horizon below heavy cloud would have allowed the sun to illuminate the strand but as is typical for the Atlantic coastline, cloud persevered. My only option was to work with the soft overcast light to work with elements of the environment and I was pleased with the soft expressionist flow of the water allowed for this final composition.
