Omey Milky Way
The Milky Way rises to the south from Omey Island while a few meteors streak across the sky. The two bright satellites centre left are Jupiter, the brighter of the two, with Saturn slightly dimmer to its left. Far off in the distance in the bottom right lies the light of Slyne Head Lighthouse, reflecting off the clouds and keeping mariners safe from harm.

During a visit to one of the least light-polluted areas in the west of Ireland, I wanted to capture the Milky Way rising from the south while I camped out on Omey Island. As night fell and I waited for astronomical twilight to end, I was fortunate enough to have as clear skies as possible to capture this magnificent sight. I did not expect, however, to be able to see the glimmering light of Slyne Head Lighthouse some 15km south of here.
